TASMANIAN GOVERNORSHIP
ENGLISH NOMINEE WITHDRAWS. HOBART, August 10. The Premier (Mr Joyous) has announced that Mr J. O’Grad'y, Labour member nf the British House of Commons for South-East Leeds, who had been mentioned as likely .to, become Governor ot Tasmania, inis withdrawn Lis nommation. tt i i. The Administrator Herbert Nicholls) said that the difficulty was to find in England a person suitable for such office as the governorship of Tasmania, who was able and willing to carry out the duties for the amount ot money provided by the Tasmanian Parliament. In view of the fact that the Ministry hns made it clear that it is not intended to increase the salary and allowances attached to the Governor's office, Urn position has become acute. Mr Lyons was asked if ho considered the appointment of an Englishman as Governor irnjrrobable. “I would not say that,” he replied, “I should say that it is a matter which rests entirely with the Parliament of Tasmania, which has the power, of course, to increase the salary and allowances.” In the circumstances, it is probable that Sir Herbert Nicholls, as Chief Justice, will be appointed Lieutenant-Governor, but this will not make any difference as regards the appointment of an English' Governor.
