GOLF.
By Ditot. A. Seymour and 11. W. Macfarlane, of Christchurch, will leave for Auckland tomorrow' to participate in the New Zealand golf championship. The women’s golf championship of VI estern Australia has been won by Mrs Ransom for the fourth year in succession, and five times in all. Entries for all events at the New' Zealand golf championship meeting to be at Middlemore, Auckland, from I*riday, September 5, to Saturday, September 13,.-close to-morrow'. Famous golfers owe much to their caddies, Walter Hagen, the British open champion, took with him to France for the open championship there the caddie who went round with him during his last two visits to England. One of the five British open championships since the war resulted in a lie; three were won by one stroke, and one won by two strokes. It is easy to see why a competitor (gets anxious when ho drops a couple of strokes; but. it is not so clear why some of the glory which goes to the winner should not go to the runner-up. If the qualifying rounds of the British open golf championship had been included in the championship itself, the result, would have been very different. Ihe loaders, in such an event, would have been: J. If. ’Baylor 449. E. R. Whitcombe 452, F. Ball 452, G. Gadd 456, W. Hagen 457. Macdonald f-’mith 457, A. Boomer 457, G. Duncan 459. The inference is that the. British-born players shot their bolt too soon. At the Shirley links during the past week-end a ball was driven from the first tee, which carried, with a slight pull, almost green high, and came down among the players who had just left the green. It struck one player on the hack, of the head. He had ducked just enough to avoid the full force, and the hall cannoned off him and struck another player, also on- the back of the brad. Neither player went, down from the impact, hut both wore staggered, and fortunate to get off so well. At. Karori a few days ago B. Cody did the eighth hole (105 yards) in one. The contractors for the alterations that are being executed on the Balmacewen links have been favoured with hue weather and have made highly satisfactory progress with their work. A fresh green is now being prepared for the second hole, and the top lavers of soil are being nlaced on the fifth and sixth greens. The eighth green looks as though the height of it may yet have to he increased at the baek, hut otherwise it is ready for being re-grassod. The ground staff at the links is outraged in preparing a new tee at the fourteenth.
