A war memory has been revived by an officer on the Gorman freighter Westfalen, wldch arrived at Sydney on August 8 from Hamburg. Just prior to the outbreak of war the ship departed for Germany from her last Australian port of call. A wireless was picked np at sea that the “Faderland had gone to war. The captain realised that the Westfalen could be in far healthier places than Australian water, and so alterec! hi« course, and shaped for the neutral safety of a South American port. She crept into Valparaiso eventually, and lay idle in this haven of shelter, safe from the perils of a world-war for six years. Notwithstanding this long wait, however, she was lost temporarily to tho German mercantile marine, for she was handed over to Britain as a war prize. The steamer was fated to end her days under tho red, white, and black banner, as a German company robonght her, and now the Westfalen is voyaging to Australia again. BUNINYOG TO EE SOLD. OCEANIC COMPANY'S LINER SIERRA. At a representative gathering nf shipping and commercial men nn board tho Oceanic Steamship Company's mail liner Sierra, at Sydney, on August I, Mr N. A. Sprout, managing agent for the company in Australia, said that tho Sierra was practically a. new ship, and was equal in regard to accommodation to any passenger vessel now trading to Australia. lie asked the visitors to inspect the vessel and judge for themselves what they thought of the accommodation and latest improvements now installed for the comfort of passengers travelling to San Francisco. Captain J. H. Trask, commander of the Sierra, who made an interesting speech, said that when the Sierra was renovated every plate was examined and found to be in perfect condition, eo that not one plate had to be replaced. The same, applied to the boilers. Tho Sierra had been gutted from stem to stern. The company had done everything to make the Sierra a popular passenger vessel, and no expense had been Rpa-rod in fitting out her cabins, which ranked with the best liners now afloat. Of course, ho said, if the company could have secured a ion years' contract with the American Government they would have built vessels of 12,000 tons and 20 knots, but the American people had not yet grown to understand what a. 20 knots service would mean to the American nation, and the passenger service to Australia, but in the near future ho hoped it would come.
