Vick-Regal. A Wellington Pres? Association message reports (hit their Excellencies Viscount and Viscountess Jcllicoc have arranged to leave Wellington to-day on a visit to Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay. To-morrow they will alt cm] a gathering of Maoris near Hastings in honour of Sir James Carroll, and o-n Thursday they will leave Napier by motor for Gisborne, where they will fulfil a variety of engagements on Friday and Saturday. On their return to Napier their Excellencies will have further engagements on August <5 and 26, a visit to Hastings being included. His Excellency will return to Wellington on August 27, and her Excellency on the following day alter performing the opening of the now parish hall at Masterton. Mr 0. Todd (Mayor of St. Kilda) returned from a business trip to Auckland by the express last night. Air S. Kincaid, a member of the railway clerical staff at Omalcau, who has been transferred to Milburn, was entertained at a social and presented with a well-filled purse. Mr Taylor Cannon, in making the presentation, referred in complimentary terms to the guest’s many good qualities both as an officer and as a private citizen. At the conclusion of tho morning service in Knox Church on Sunday occasion was taKen by the members of the choir to express to Air W. Paget Gale, choirmaster, their congratulations upon his appointment us choirmaster at the forthcoming Exhibition, and to wish him every success in his projected work. At tiie quarterly meeting of the Otago Patriotic and General Welfare Association yesterday morning, Air J. J. Clark (chairman) moved that a message of sincere sympathy in his illness and good wishes for his speedy recovery be conveyed to Mr F. G. Gumming. Mr Clark said that such a message would be appreciated, and that tho illness of Mr Gumming had probably been brought about to sonic extent through his service daring the strenuous days of the war. The motion was carried unanimously. Tho Mayor (Air H. L. Tap lev), Or J. B. Shaddock (chairman of the Electric Power and Light Committee), and Air G. A. Lewin (town clerk), who have been on a visit to Wellington, returned to Dunedin by the express last night. Air M. Henderson (city electrical engineer), who was also a member of the party, remained in Christchurch to visit the Lake Coleridge works, and he will return to Dunedin to-night.
Tho death occurred at her residence in Dundas street on Sunday of Miss Alary Jane Bell, aged 80 years. Throughout an illness lasting for three months Aliss Bell was bright and cheerful, but the end came very suddenly. Miss Bell came to New Zealand from Victoria in 1873 and took up her residence in the .North Island, but in 1892 she came to Dunedin and resided here permanently. Aliss Bell was a staunch supporter of All Saints’ Church. It was previously arranged that Professor John Adams, the eminent English educationist, who is visiting New Zealand on the invitation of the Education Department, university professors, and the Teachers’ Association, should arrive in Dunedin on Saturday night next, and leave again on Tuesday morning. It has now been arranged that ho will spend an extra day in Dunedin. On Tuesday morning at 9.30 ho will give an address to teachers, taking for his subject “Teaching as a Fine Art.” In the evening he will lecture in Burns Hall on “Personality in Social Life.” Professor Adams was accorded a civic reception in Wellington yesterday.
