SCHOOL CHILDREN AT PLAY.
MILTON v. MACANDREW ROAD. When the 9.5 a.m. train pulled out from the station southward bound on Saturday morning two car loads of happy boys and girls of the Macandrew Road School, under the charge of Mr Bowie and his staff, wore aboard en route to Milton to spend the day in a scries of friendly contests comprising hockey, basket ball, and foo-oall with the pupils of the Milton District High School. /.fter a pleasant run out across the iaieri Plain m beautiful weather, which enabled everyone to see the Taieri River and Lake Waihola, with Mount Maungatua in the backgiound. Milton was reached at 11.30 a.m. Mr Mer.zies and the staff of the Milton Distant High School had everything well arranged for the entertainment of the visitors—about 00 in all. , . After lunch the first game to oc piavecl was the A Bantam football team against a similar loam of the local boys, Macandrew Road scored a win by 16 ppints to nil, tries being secured by Hansen (2), Ramsay, and Pcdlow, Carkie” converting two of them.. AD Hies? points were put on in tho first spell. In the second spell the Milton boys combined together better and put up a fine game, which kept the visitors from increasing their score. The boys get very little play in this grade in the country distncUi, which is to bo, regretted. The outstanding plavcrs on the local aide were Barclay and Be Erg in the back division, and Hanson and Campbell of the forwards. The Macandrew Road boys all. played well, and the onlookers were highly delighted at the skill shown, especially by the backs, who passed the ball about freely and accurately. The A. Grade match followed, Macandrew Road winning by 11 points to nil. Tries were scored by D. TTcvatlian and Inglis (2), T. Trevathan converting one of them. The visitors had the bettor of the first spell, but on resuming after half-time the local forwards played a fine game, and kept the town botys busy. The outstanding players amongst the Milton boys were Murray, Smith, and Burns in the backs, and vviison and Hansen in the forwards. Hanson has been invited to come to Dunedin to take part in schools’ trial matches this week. As in the former match the onlookers were highly impressed with the skill in which the Macandrew Road boys handled and kicked the ball. The basket ball match followed, and was played in the school grounds, resulting in a win for the Macandrew Road girls by 21 points to nil. The girls hockey match took place on an adjoining ground, and the Milton girls proved to be superior to the visiting girls and scored a decisive win by S goals to nil. In the first spell the Milton girls scored 7 goals, but on resuming after the interval Macandrew Road put up a stiffer fight, and only allowed one more goal to be registered. Tho Milton girls sre to be congratulated on their fine display. Miss Vidal and Miss Bcaford have been invited to come to Dunedin to take part in the schools hockey trials. Miss Yardly (basket ball), Mr Harrison (hockey), and Messrs Gibbs and Marshall, the referees in the various matches, carried out their duties in a fair and impartial manner and left nothing to be desired. The parents of the Milton District High School pupils are to Dt highly complimented on the generous hospitality meted out to the Macandrew Road boys and girls, and tho parents of those children will gladly welcome a.n opportunity to repay Iho kindness when Milton visits Macandrew Road School. On the railway platform a large gathering of parents and pupils assembled to see tho vis'tors del-art. Hearty cheers were exchanged by both parties as the train steamed out. On the journey home tho School Committee provided a plentiful supply of fruit.
