NEAR APPROACH TO THE EARTH. Press Aesociation—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, August 18. (Received August 18, at 8 p.m.) Hie Daily Chronicle says that Mars will be nearer the earth on August 22 than at any time since the end of the eighteenth century and will afford unique opportunities for observation from South America, South Africa, and Australia. — A. and N.Z. Cable. 'When Mars is in opposition on August 23—the actual date in this part of the world—it will be nearer and brighter than it has been, or will be, in last century or this. The planet w r as more than usually bright at the oppositions in 1909 (September), 1892 (August), and 1877 (September), but these were excelled in the year 1845 when opposition occurred on August 18, and the brightness was appro.xiraa.tcly that of tho present year. Sir John Herschel suggested that the red colour of Mars was perhaps due to red rocks like that of the old rod sandstone, but more recently attempts have been made to show that it is due to certain qualities of the Martian atmosphere.
