PLUNKET SOCIETY.

Tho' monthly meeting of the committee was held in the Plunket rooms on Friday, August 16, at 10.30 a.m. Present—Mrs Johnstone (in the chair). Lady Ross, Mesdames Jos. M'George, Theomin, Sidey, Peter Barr, A. 0. Mathieson, G. Gallawav, John Watson, Coleman, Isaacs, Barnett, O’Neill, Fraser, J. C. M'George, Carmalt Jones, Miss Gow, and the secretary. Apologies were received from Mesdames C. W. Rattray, Sydney Neill, Clapperton. W. A. Moore, and Jackson. The Hon. Treasurer presented the statement of the society’s finances to date, and acocunts were passed for payment. The treasurer reported that the receipts for the month included a number of subscriptions and donations. Remits from the branches to the general conference of the society, to bo held in Wellington on September 2 and the following days, were read and discussed. Mesdames J. A. Johnstone. D. E. Theomin, Jos. M'George, C. W. Rattray, T. K. Sidey. W. A. Moore, A. Barnett, and Fraser, and Miss Downie Stewart were appointed delegates to tho conference. The Matron of tho Karitane-Harris Hospital reported for the month of July: Patients in hospital on June 30.—Mothers 1, babies 1.7 —18. Admitted for treatment during July.—Mothers 7, babies 17—24. Discharged during the month. —Mothers 6, babies 15 —21. In hospital on July 31. Mothers 2, babies 17—19. Greatest number in hospital on any one day.—Mothers 2, babies 22 —24. 'Of tho mothers and babies admitted during the month, ono mother and triplets came from Dunedin, one mother and baby from Middlemarch, one mother and baby from Clydevalo, one mother and baby from Mosgiel, one mother and baby from Alexandra, and one mother and baby from South Dunedin. Of the babies admitted during the month, one came from Kaitangata, one from Sandymount, and the remainder came from Dunedin and suburbs. There are 18 Plunket nurses in training. Nurses M'Lean and Barnett commenced a course of Plunkct training during the month. There are 11 Karitane nurses in training. Nurse Calder finished her Karitane course during the month, Tho Plunket nurses’ examination was held on Thursday, July 31. Visitors for the month numbered 130. Mrs Pirie Beyca, from lona, U.S.A.. visited the hospital, and was much interested in the methods carried out. She gave a very interesting address to the nurses, taking “Ser vice” as her subject. Gifts were gratefully received from Mesdames Theomin, Duke, Rattray, and tho Glondining Home. The Plunket nurses for North and Central Dunedin districts reported for tho month ended Julv 31:— , Babies on the list, 620; babies breast-fed (including partly), 129; new cases for the month (babies only), 50; new cases breastfed (including partly), 29; visits to Plunket rooms. Stuart street (adults 212, children 203), 415; visits to Plunket rooms, Rosiyn (adults 60, children 65), 125; advice given to expectant mothers, 8; visits paid to homes, 331; bottles of humanised milk sent out from the Taieri Dairy, 6595. Tho Plunket nurse for South Dunedin district reported for the month of July:— Babies on the list, 420; babies breastfed (including partly), 100; new coses for the month (babies only), 20; now cases breast-fed (including partly), 17; visits paid to homes, 276; visits to Plunket rooms, .South Dunedin (adults 135, babies 128), 263. Tho Plunket nurse for Anderson s Bay district and outstations reported for the month of July as under:— Babies on tho list, 219 : babies breastfed (including partly), 80 ; new cases for the month (babies only), 15; now cases breast-fed (including partly), 12; visits paid to homes, 194; visits to Plunket rooms, Stuart street, from Anderson’s Bay district (adults 29, babies 29). 58; visits to Plunket rooms. Mosgiel (adults 39, babies 38), 77; visits paid to Plunket rooms. Port Chalmers (adults 28. babies 29), 57 The following visits were paid to outstations during the month: —Mosgiel 5, Wingatni 5, Abbotsford 6, Green Island 4, Burnside 4, Port Chalmers 1 6, Sawyers’ Bay 5, Ravensbourno 5. The. Plunket nurses reported that the genera] health of the babies under their care during the month was very good.
