ASHBURTON v. OTAGO. BASKETBALL AND HOCKEY. MATCHES. Matches to decide supremacy in basket ball and hockey were played on the Caledonian Ground yesterday afternoon between teams represeutisg Ashburton and the Otago Girls’ High School. The weather was fine, though somewhat cold, and there was a fairly good attendance, composed mostly of juveniles, who watched the proceedings with the keenest interest. BASKET BALD. WIN FOR~ OTAGO. Tho local players quickly took the lead in tho basket ball match, and at half-time wore leading by eight points to two. Both teams had numerous chances in the early stages, but while the Otago girls were successful in putting the ball through the ring the visitors played with a good deal of bad luck, missing scores by very narrow margins. Tho first two goals were scored by Elsie Logan, and Nina M'Callum also stored for tho local team before Ashburton opened their account. About halfway through tho spell Loma Acton scored for Ashburton, making tho figures read 6-2 in favour of Otago. Before half-time Dorothy Wilson and Nina, M'Callum scored for Otago from free throws, and when tho teams crossed over, tho home team was leading by 8 points to 2. Soon after tho opening of the second spell Elsie Logan added two more points for Otago, and then Dorothy Wilson scored from a free throw, tho local players thus leading by 11 points to 2. The next goal was scored by Elsie Logan (Otago). In the concluding stages Nina Buchanan secured a goal and also scored from a free throw, making the final figures:— Otago 13 points Ashburton 5 points Tho game was controlled by Mr Hanna. HOCKEY MATCH. VICTORY FOR ASHBURTON. The play in the opening stages of the hockey match was fast and fairly even. The visitors appeared to have a slight advantage, but a few strong attacks were made by the local team. There was no score, however, until shortly before the end of the first spell. About five minutes before halftime Ashburton had to concede a comer shot, but the attack was staved off, and tho visitors immediately rushed the ball to tho other end, where Bernio Milliohamp scored a nice goal. Immediately before half-time a good shot was splendidly stopped by the Ashburton custodian. Ashburton attacked at the opening of the second spell, but Otago quickly cleared, and for some time plav ranged chiefly between the Otago twontv-five and half-way. About half-wav through the sooll the home team attacked, but could not penetrate the defence of the visitors. A little later Otago attacked again, but Ashburton cleared without much difficulty, aud took play to the other end. Chrissie Bowden seeding the hall into the net with a nice shot, after some fine play. Two more attacks by the visitors were well stormed bv the local goalkeeper at the oxnenso of corner shots. Just before time Otago made a, strong attack'. but could not score, and tho gamo ended : Ashburton 2 yoals Otago Nil
