GENERAL NEWS.

Tho monthly meeting of the Oavereham School Committee was held on Monday evening, there being a full attendance of members. The head master reported that the roll number was 642. The saving® bank deposits amounted to £lO6 13s lOd, and withdrawals £8 10s 3d. The pupils of Standard Y, under the leadership of Miss G. Farnie, had organised a jumble sale, at -which upwards of ill had been taken. That amount was to go towards defraying tho cost ot' a gramophone which had been purchased for uso in the school. It was suggested that a eale on a larger scale than that held recently be held on September 27 in order to raise money to purchase a delineascope and other adjuncts to school work. It was decided to print amd distribute circulars inviting the assistance and co-operation of the parents in that matter. The report of the inspectors (Messrs Bain and Nicoleon) showed that the work of the school was of a very satisfactory nature. The Education Board advised that the committee’s application for installation of electric light wae declined in view of the fact that a new school was to be built sooner or later. The visiting committee reported having visited the school and found everything satisfactory. The monthly meeting of the Porbury School Committee was held on Monday night, Mr W. Fleming being in the chair. Other members present were: Messrs C. A. Lucas, W Ritchie, J. T. Roberts, J. D. M'Curdy, G. A. Munro, H. Alexander, and B. Bern. The head master reported that tho attendance for the past month had been satisfactory. The term holidays would be observed from August 25 to September 8, both days inclusive, school being resumed on Tuesday, September 9. The deposits ill the school savings bank for the month amounted to .£23 14s. The Rev. R. Painnaid, convener of the Bible classes at the school, wrote stating that the condition of hia health compelled him to retire from active participation in connection with these classes. Messrs Ritchie and M'Curdy reported visiting the school during Uu. month.
