CHARLES HACKETT CONCERT.

Tho world-famous ton or, Mr Charles Hackett. will make his first appearance hero to-night in His Majesty's 'theatre. Throe concerts will bo given under the direction of Air K. J. Oravcstoek, the first to-night, the second on .Saturday night, mid the third and final on Monday night. The supporting artists are M. Yovauovitch Bratza, the young Serbian virtuoso of the violin, and Mr Clarence Kaybould, tho distinguished English pianist A feature of Mr Backoffs programme to-night will be the favourite ana ,“Cbe gelida nianina.” widely known as the Poet’s Song, from Puccini’s opera, “La Boheme.” Jt was in the role of the impoverished, romantic poet. Rodolio, that Mr Hackett was first hoard at Covent Garden in 1923. with Dame Nellie Melba a.s Mimi; The occasion was a memorable one. Tho performance had been specially arranged to give Londoners an opportunity of hearing tho young American who bad quickly risen to iho position of foremost operatic tenor tn Europe After Mr llackelt had sung the “Post’s Song’’ in the first act. the hugp audience realised that at last a tenor worthy of the traditions of Covent Garden had -arrived, Certainly the name or Charles ITaekett would now appear on the scroll of Covent Garden's mighty tenors in succession to Jean do Deazke, Mario, Tamapno, and Caruso. Despite the convention usually so strictly observed at Coveut Garden, a great ovation was accorded the “new Caruso,’’ holding up the action of tho opera for several minutes, while Mr Hackett repeatedly bowed bis acknowledgment. The demonstration was repeated at the close of the performance. Other items in the great tenor’s programme to-night will be Salvator Rosa s beautiful old “hel canto” air “Star Vicino.” operatic arias by Mozart, Verdi, Gluck, and Voracini, and modern songs by John Irelanc. Rachmaninov, Richard Hageman, and Roger Qnitler. M. Bratza, the young Serbian violinist, of whom so much is expected. will be heard in the first movement of TVhaikowskv’s Concerto m D, with Air Clarence Re.vbould at the piano, and such lessor numbers ns the Kroisler arrangements of Dvorak’s Slavonic Dance in E minor, and Bach Gavolto.
