GENERAL NEWS.

At the monthly meeting of the Kaikorai School Committee the Hoad Master reported that the roll was 582, with an average attendance of 542, there having been a fair amount of sickness. The inspectors had examined the school, and the sports teams were maintaining their improved form. The sum of 32s 6d had boon subscribed by the children towards the cruiser Dunedin’s band. It was decided to apply to the Education Board for the installation of electric lighting in th© school for cleaning purposes, and also to install it in the gymnasium at the committee’s expense, for which money would havo to be raised locally. The meeting of householders with regard to the Roslyn baths will bo called for August 4. Messrs Arrait and Taylor were appointed a Visiting Committee for the month and also to confer with Mr Matheson concerning the holding of a concert to raise funds for the band and for the committee’s requirements. The North-East Valley branch of the W.C.T.U. held its annual Maori missionary mooting in the institute, the president (Mrs Peart) presiding over a good attendance. Mrs Taylor gave an address on “Work Among the Maoris.” Mrs Peart also gave her experiences in the Maori mission field. Both addresses wore most interesting and much appreciated. The secretary was instructed to write to the Prime Minister and Mr Munro, M.P. for Dunedin North, asking for their support to the Biblo-in-sohools Bill, and protesting against tho granting of more racing permits; also to wire the Hon. Mr Clark asking him to support the Bill concerning tho appointment of women J.P.’s. Final arrangements were made ir connection with the concert and gift sale to be held in August. One now member was enrolled. Tho Good Intent Lodge, U.A.0.D., Mosgiel, held its annual social on Friday night in tho Coronation Hall. There was a good attendance, well over 100 couples dancing, and many more indulging in a game of cards Tho social proved ono of the most enjoyable of tho season. Music was supplied by Watt’s Orchestra, and Bros. R. Thomson, W. W. Turnbull, Fred Garrett, and M. J. Thomson wore masters of ceremonies. In tho course of the evening P.A. Bro. A. It. Harris was presented with a diploma, Dist. President Bro. Workman making the presentation. All the local friendly societies were represented. Tho visitors from Dunedin included the Grand Guardian, Bro. Churchill ; Past District President Brockie (of the Board of Management), District President Pro. Workman (No. 1 district), and Bro Walker (No. 2 district). Messrs Frew Bros, provided refreshments. All tho local officers were untiring in their efforts to make all present enjoy themselves. The monthly meting of Good Intent Lodge, U.A.0.D., Mosgiel, was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Tuesday, A.D. Bro. Johnson pi ©si.” or. _ , The lodge was favoured with aj> official visit from D.P. Bro. Workman. Bho Visual routine lodge business was conducted, and a rehearsal was held of the ceremony for tho forthcoming competition. Parties from the Mosgiel Dairy Factory suppliers and the Mosgiel Fire Brigade spent an enjoyable evening in the fire station last, Thursday at a euchre tournament, tho former gaining the honours for the evening. Mr William Blackie was in tho chair. When tho tournament was over a pleasant hour was spent in harmony. A return tournament will take place at an early date.
