THE DAVIS CUT. FRANCE REACHES EUROPEAN PINAL. Praa Association —3y Tolsgisph—CopyrigM. LONDON, July 29. At Eastbourne France earned the right to meet Czecho-Slovakia in the Davis Cup European final, defeating Britain by tour matches to one. In the doubles Borotra and Brugnon (France) beat Woosnam and Godfree (Britain) 6—4, 4—6, 6—3, 6—l. In the singles Gilbert (Britain) beat Cochct 5—7, I—6, 9—7, B—6, 6—2, and Lacosto (France) beat Kingscote 0 6, 3—6, 3—6, 6—2, 6—4.—Reuter. WOOD DEI EATS PATTERSON. NEW YORK, July 29. (Received July 30, at 7.16 p.m.) At Scabright in an exhibition singles match' O’Hara Wood defeated Patterson 6—2, o—6, 6—4.— A . and N.Z. Cable. Gilbert’s defeat of Cochet is rather surprising as the Frenchman recently reached the final of the Olympic singles, in which he was defeated by Richards, whereas Gilbert was beaten in one of the earlier rounds by Harada (Japan). Cochet, who is ranked by the authorities as among the world's first ten, would not be so well suited by the grass courts at Eastbourne, as he was by the hard courts of Paris, but nevertheless Gilbert must have made a great recovery after losing the first two sets and being 7 all in what might well have been the deciding set. Kingscote, on the occasion of Ids nnal appearance in the Davis Oup competition, also made a fine showing against the dashing young Frenchman Lacoste.
