N.Z. AND SOUTH SEAS EXHIBITION.

Tlic' weekly meeting’ of the directors of the New Zooland and South Seas Exhibition Company was hold last night, and was attended by Messrs J. Sutherland Ross (in the chair), 11. L. Taplov, O. Speight, I’. L. Halsted, C, Todd, A. Barnett, 11. I’. Sincock, W. R. Hayward, and T. Somerv i II o. Mr Tapley wag granted permission to leave the meeting, as ho had to attend the meeting called to discuss matters connected with League football. Mr \V. A. James was appointed executive commissioner of tho Kxhibiton at Vancouver. A letter was received from the secretary of tho Otago Harbour Board (Mr W. J. Bardsley) stating that the company's application for a lease of land on the smith side of Union street, opposite tho Exhibition site, and the application from the City Council for the same area (to lie used as a balloon loop) would ho discussed by the board with (ho company and the City Council at a date to he arranged.—Noted. Mr J. TV. Collins, secretary of the Department of Industries and Commerce, wrote enclosing copy of a letter addressed by (he Premier of New South Wales to the Prime Minister (Mr Mas-soy);—“Refer-ring to my letter of May 26 on tho subject of (ho New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition, to he held in (he summer of 1925-26, I have to inform you that I am now in receipt of a communication from the Commonwealth Prime Minister to the efl'i cr. (hat the general question of commonwealth participation in the Exhibition is now receiving tJio consideration of tho Commonwealth Board of Trade, which is in communication with Mr If. J. Manson, New Zealand trade representative in Victoria, and the Empire Ivchihition Commission. The Prime Minister promises to write again, when further information is available on the subject.” A considerable amount of routine business was transacted. WORKS COMMITTEE. (Mr Hayward submitted the report of the Works Committee. ft road as follows;--‘‘Mr Hayward reported that the Space Committee approved of Mr Ansconibe's .suggestion mat the machinery building should ho increased by 50ft and No. 5 decreased by same amount. “The question of storm water drainage was fully discussed, arid it was resolved Hi at tile direct ors bo recommended to request mo Exhibition, the Harbour Board, and the drainage engineers to confer and advise as to (ho best method of providing storm water drainage during the currency of the Exhibition, giving due weight to the amount which may be recoverable on (a) the drainage on oast side, (h) (he drainage on west side, if either of (hose becomes (he site of the permanent drainage. “The matter of sewerage was discussed, when it wa.s resolved that the directors bo recommended to instruct, tho architect, to confer with tho drainage engineer and report. “Mr Hayward reported that tho subcommittee had waited on tho superintendent of the fire brigade, who suggested that the water main .mould bo carried right through the grand court to the rear of tho concert hah, and two branches led off same, about its middle length; that tho two ponds should be of sufficient capacity k> enable tho steam pump to bo used. The fire brig-ado superintendent was agreeable to treat the pump as an exhibit.—Resolved that tho directors bo recommended to inarchitect to got into touch with tho Fire Board and prepare an estimate of cost of making provision for tile housing of the pump. “Tho question of turnstiles was discussed. —Secretary to write to the Lancaster Bark trustees, Christchurch, for information regarding the style of turnstiles used by them. “Letter from Mr Anscombo regarding spoil from excavations at University buildings read.—Resolved that the directors bo recommended to instruct architect to arrange a dump for the spoil provided (ho material is suitable for tho purposes of tho Exhibition. “The question of bringing the clay down (he hillside, was discussed, and it was resolved that tho Works Committee reaffirm its previous recommendation, that tenders should be called for doing tho work, the successful tenderer to have the use of the chute and plant if ho wishes.—Messrs Neos, Simpson, and engineer to wait on Mr Fulmer regarding the shifting of the clay at khe top of the hill. “ Letter from Olago Harbour Board stating that the board would not proceed with tho formation of a culvert under Union street read. “ It was resolved to recommend tho directors to accept (ho tender of Messrs Turnbull and Jones (amounting to £301) for the electric lighting of No. 7 building.” Tho report was adopted. MUSIC COMMITTEE. Mr Halsted submitted the Music Committee’s report. It read as follows; “Tho chairman (Mr Phillips) said that the mooting was a special one for tho consideration of appointment of a choirmaster. After several members had expressed their opinions, it was resolved that the directors he recommended to proceed as follows: To advertise for applications for the position of conductor of the Exhibition choir. To confine (ho advertisements to Dunedin papers. That advertisement make no mention of remuneration. That when applications have, dosed a mooting of committee be held to select a conductor for recommendation to tho directors. “On the suggestion Of Air Halsted it was decided to inform the directors that in tho opinion of the committee the cost of tho choir would ho about £SOO, exclusive of cost of soloists.” Mr Halsted said that it was expected to get together a choir cf_ four to five hundred voices Tlie committee did not think it worth while to advertise outside of Dm; edin. as it was hardly likely that there would be any outside applicants who would bo prepared to come to Dunedin and stay here for some 12 mouths to train the choir at the remuneration which could be offered. The report was 'adopted. LOCAL COURTS. Air Somerville said that at the meeting of the sub-committee regarding local courts Kt> had explained the position and brought up tlie question of the treatment of primary products. It had been resolved to remit the question for further examination to another suh-committeo. Mr C. Todd had been ashed and had agreed to bring forward a plan of campaign for canvassing Otago and setting up of a provincial court. Tho report was adopted.
