THE PRESBYTERY AND THE NEW ZEALAND ALLIANCE. TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —It was with great interest and not a little disgust that, as a Presbyterian, I read in your issue 'of the 2nd the report of the recent Dunedin Presbytery discussion on (he liquor traffic. if it is true, as the Rev. 11. M‘Lean says, that the liquor traffic beats the alliance for wit —which I suppose means brain —it is no wonder, seeing that ministers in high places are prepared to stand up and advocate it. and arc afraid to speak out against it in their pulpits. As the old song says, “In every battle falls a soldier by the help lent the foe.” I think the need for our ministers to show and hold before the people the evils of the liquor traffic are more necessary than ever at the present time. As an instance of the indifference of our young folk, quite, recently the girls from our leading Presbyterian college in Dunedin hold their reunion dinner at an hotel. This excited a great deal of talk and comment, and I feel certain that, a few years ago such a , thing would not. have been thought of, especially in a town where there are unlicensed restaurants which cater quite as satisfactorily as an hotel. It seems to me there is something lar wrong. Is it not from our young folk we are expecting much with an the advantages and enlightenment ef these days? Our rosponsiblities are great, and surely it is not asking too much of our ministers to come frankly to (ho tore and help us.—l am, etc., A Mother.
