The Commonwealth and Dominion Line, after building about a dozen up-to-date steamers during tho last few years for its New Zealand trade, is going to improve tho service to a further extent. Tho line has under construction two large insulated vessels to bo driven by internal combustion, or motor engines. One is being built in tho Workman,, Clark yards, and tho other at the Swan and Hunten yards. Each vessel will be of approximately 11,000 tone, and will have a carrying capacity of 10,000 freight carcases of 601 b, as far as meat is concerned, and apace for 16,000 bales of wool additional. They have been specially designed to meet the requirements of the New Zealand trade, their length being shorter than would be the case were they propelled by steam, with tho necessity to provide tho usual apace for engines and boilers. They will be specially suitable for working in roadstead ports and inside ports like Oamaru, Nelson, and ultimately Wanganui. The following are some particulars of vhe ships:—Length 465 ft, beam 59ft, depth 43ft gin, sea speed, 13J knots, engines Doxford opposed piston type. These engines have proved highly successful in a number of single screw vessels, but they aro being installed for tho first time, it is believed, with these two twin screw vessels. The whole of the auxiliary machinery will ho electrically driven. The vessels are expected, to be ready for nekt season’s New Zealand loading.
