POLITICAL AFFAIRS

ME MASSEY DEFENDED

REPLY TO MR WILFORD. (Per United Press Association.) HAMILTON, Juno 20. Mr J. A. Young, member for Hamilton, in delivering a.n address in reply to Mr Wilford, claimed that the country never had such a capable and efficient Minister of Finance as Mr Massey. The Prime Minister had never been defeated on a no-confidence motion, and the talk about an early election appeared absurd. With reference to Mr Wilford’s charge of reckless dealing with State Advancerfunds by taking £239,000 from the Advances Department and putting it into the War Loan, Mr Young claimed that those temporary investments were quits legitimate. No part of the recently-raised £5.000,000 loan would be utilised to pay back to the State Advances Office the £2,000,000 of temporary advances, but the State Advances Fund would receive £2,000,000 more out of the loan. The most liberal party in the House was Mr Massey’s party. The Government had husbanded the country’s financial resources. Mr Young was accorded a vote of thanks and continued confidence.
