OBITUARY.

MR JOHN JOSEPH CONNOR. The death occurred at his residence, Koyston street. North-Kaet Valley, on 'Thursday, of Mr John Joseph Connor, at uie age of 85 years. Deceased, who vyas an old and respected citizen of Dunedin, was one of the first printers in Otago, lie was born in Sydney, and later went to Melbourne, whore he served his time at his trade. In 1862 he arrived in Dunedin, and went to the Gabriel's Gully gold diggings, but after a short time there he returned to Dunedin, and entered the employ of the Evening fetar Company. In 1870 he was appointed foreman of the letterpress department of Mills, Dick, and Co. After about seven years with this firm deceased took over the Maitland Hotel, ms old trade attracted him again, and a short lime later he became a partner in the firm of Woodificld, Jolly, and Connor, printers, in the Octagon. He later became associated with Bishop Moran in publishing the Tablet, and was manager of that company for a number of years, deceased then took over the City and Criterion Hotels in conjunction with his nephew, Mr J. T. Harris, and about If years ago ho retired from business._ For the past, 12 years he had been in indifferent health, and was bedridden for six years. I'ho late Mr Connor was a staunch Catholic, and took a great interest in the affairs of the church. He was one of the first members of St. Joseph’s Church Choir, and frequently arranged concert programmes for church benefits. He was also keenly interested in the Dunedin Hibernian Sociotv, and wan the third president, holding office in 1875. During his lifetime deceased made a wide circle of friends. He '« survived by his widow, seven daugnters, and four sons.
