GRASS FIRE CASE. SUPREME COURT PROCEEDINGS. VERDICT FAVOURS PLAINTIFFS. (Per United Press Association ) CHRISTCHURCH, Juno 20. After a hearing extending over seven days, the case in which Robert Keir A)‘Caudless, a farmer at Parnassus, claimed £1913 10s. and Ali.st.cr Malcolm MaeFarlano £4OOO from Norman Rutherford, of Alcndip Hills, for damage alleged to have been done by a grass fire which spread from the nlaintiffs’ property, was concluded in the Supremo Court to-day. The jury found in favour of plaint ill's by a threefourths majority for lesser amounts than those claimed. Mr Justice Adams was on the bench, and there was a common jury of 12. MaeFarlano was awarded £SOO damages and M'Caudless £526. An application by counsel for defendant to move for a non-suit and a new trial on the ground that the verdict was against the weight of evidence was granted.

SLY GROG-SELLING. FIXE OF £4O IMPOSED. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June, 20. Ngan, who keeps a shop at the seaside sulrurb of lia-sthourne, was fined £4O. in default one month's imprisonment, for .soiling intoxicating liquor without a license. When the police searched the promises they found 20 dozen bottles of beer, 20 bottles of port, and seven bottles of whisky. During the past six weeks defendant had boon supplied with 65 dozen bottles of beer, two dozen bottles of whisky, and two dozen bottles of port. 'Hie police staled that Ngsm had been carrying on an extensive business, and had probably been doing batter than some of the hotels.
