LONDON RAILWAY STRIKE

MEN RETURNING TO WORK. ELECTRICAL STEWARDS RESTIVE. Press Association—By Telefrraph—Copyright. .LONDON, June 12. Tire underground railways employees flocked to work following the ultimatum, thus enabling improved services to be run. The leaders are hoping for assistance from the Electrical Union, which' to-day failed to persuade the companies to consider its demand for increased wages. The electrical shop stewards threaten to declare an official strike and to bring out all the workers at the power station, which would completely stbp the underground work.— Sydney Sun Cable. CRITICAL PHASE PASSED. NO EXTENSION OF THE STRIKE. LONDON, June 12. (Received June 13, at 7.20 p.m.) A critical phase of the London underground dispute passed as the outcome of a meeting of the Committee of the Electrical Trade Union to consider the extension of the strike to all men employed in power stations. The meeting decided that so far as the electrical trade union was concerned the strike should be called off. A meeting of the London district committee will be held to-morrow to consider the whole position. Thus the strike is again wholly unofficial.—.Reuter. END OF THE STRIKE. MEN’S ENFORCED SURRENDER. LONDON, June 13. (Received June 13, at 8,35 p.m.) The Daily Herald says that as the result of a late-hour decision London’s unofficial strike has ended. Mr Akehurst, one of the leaders, said : “We have been beaten, not so much by the companies as by the National Union of Railwaymen. The position laid before the men was that if they did not return a lock-out would follow and the whole service would close down. We are returning only to fight again at no distant date.”— A. and N.Z. Cable.
