South Africa in their second innings made 130 for five wickets (Susakind 4\, Catterall 25) when stumps were drawn. On resuming the South Africans, on a slow, easy vricket, lost the remaining fivp> wickets in 50 minutes. Cambridge Uni* versity’s batting was good, especially Lowry’s. He compiled 67 runs in 82 minutes, giving a chance at 61. Bissett took three wickets for 36, and Nupen three for 57. The attendance was 2000.—Sydney Sun Cable. ENGLISH TEAM FOR AUSTRALIA. THE PROBABLE SELECTIONS. LONDON, June 9. The Daily Express states it is- probable that the English team for Australia will be: A. E. Gilligan (captain), Wood, Chapman, C. H. Gibson. Hoobs, Sutcliffe, Hearne, Hendren, Woolley, Tate, Parkin, Kilner, Bowiey, Geary, Howell, and a reserve wicketkeeeper, who will be either Smith (of Gloucestershire) or Duckworth (of Lancashire). Contrary to an early impression, Hobbs is likely to made the tour if his wife can accompany him. Hearne s health is not good. The sea voyage and the heat will not suit him, but he is anxious to go to Australia again. Business will prevent Fender from going. MacLaren regards Gibson, who is now m the Argentina, as the best bowler in the world.—A. and N.Z. Cable. THE COUNTY COMPETITION. HOBBS’S DOUBLE CENTURY. Middlesex made 104 against Sussex, Tate taking seven wickets for 39. Sussex replied with 183 (Tate 51). Haig took six wickets for 79. Middlesex in their second innings made 41 (A. E. Gilligan eight wickets for 25 and Tate two for 13). At Nottingham Surrey playing against Notts made 368 for four wickets when they leclaml (Hobbs 203 not out and Jeacocke 68). Notts made 115 for three wickets.
At Southampton Kent made 293 (Collins 54) against Hampshire, who made 62. Woolley took four wickets for 30 and Freeman four for 16. Hampshire followed on and made 122 (Mead 72).
Yorkshire, playing against Lancashire at Leeds, compiled 130. Parkin took five wickets for 46, and R. Tyldesley four for 69. Lancashire scored 74, Macaulay taking four for 19, and Kilner four for 13. Yorkshire have lost none for 1 in the second innings.—Reuter.
