PORT CHALMERS COUNCIL.
Last night the ordinary meeting was attended by Mr J. Watson (Mayor), Cre Lunn, Allen, Borne, Love, Dodds, Cable, Asher, Smith, and Anderson. CORRESPONDENCE. Mr J. M. juickson, M.P., forwarded a letter irom the Prune Minister in which it was stated that the Main Highways Hoard declined to take over the Main road between Port Chalmers and Dunedin, as there were railway and communication, also an alternative road'for most of the distance. — .It was decided to communicate with the West .Harbour Council and me City Council vatu a view to getting the road improved.—Cr Borne said that but for the tannery wagons carrying metal tree o£ charge the road would be even worse than it was. J. Gibbs and J. Eraser asked that the footpath at their properties in Bellevue place be put in order. —Referred to Works Committee. it. Thompson wanted the toad in front of his property in Harbour terrace attended to. —Matter to be attended to at once. A. C. Laing, secretary of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, wrote asking for lava--tory accommodation at the club room of the local batnch of the association. It was intended to make the rooms more attractive, and the attendance during the winter months should justify the improvement asked for.--Tile Sanitary Committee to report. iiKPORTS The Works Committee reported that the foreman had completed the Beach street sewer 515 ft long, with 6 Y junctions, one mud tank, and small tank at end of concrete channel. Intimation has been given to property holders affected to make connections; 100 ft ot new drain, had been tested from section 380, .Island terrace; 98ft of drain laid on Town Belt to lead the water froqi the spring into the channel; the drain at the Cottage Hospital examined, and an opening made in the sewer, George street, to take a connection from the Post Office. The loose stones had been gathered off the south ena of George street, and part of Grey and Scoua streets; channels cleaned in Wickliffe terrace, Sawyers’ Bay, and Ajax roads; part of slip in front of section 346 cleared; some shrlubs at the south end of Burns street trimmed, and the main streets and square given the usual attention.—Cr Smith wanted to know why the Beach street sewer was not carried below low-water mark. The sewer should have been deeper in order to lake m a vacant section.—Or Cable called attention to an unfilled in portion of Bernicift street. —Cr Borrie thought the Beach street sewer was well done, —The rfeportwas adopted. The Finance Committee reported that the receipts for the past fortnight amounted to £SO 14s Bd, and expenditure to £265 6s 6d. in regard to an application from Mr Thomson for the council to rotund price of material he had used in renovating their house in which he lived at Sawyers’ Bay, the committee had given this matter careful consideration, and found that Mr Thomson, by the terms of his lease, was to a certain extent responsible for the upkeep of the buildings, but under the special circumstances that he be allowed £6 6s; further the Water Committee had agreed that if Mr Thomson supplied the labour and material to lead the water into the brye and dairy, he be allowed the use of the water under usual conditions free of cost.—Cr Cable wanted to know if permission had been given to cut two trees which had been felled near the Mussel Bay tunnel.—lt was stated that permission had not been given, and that the matter would be ptR into the hands of tbo police.—Cr Lunn said Thomson’s rent did not pay the' interest on the cost of the farm. — The clause in regard to Thomson’s claim was held over, and the balance of th© report adopted. “The Gas and Water Committee recommended payment of accounts totalling £IX6 8s lid. The gasworks manager had started to put in four new services. Eleven new meters had been ordered. The water officer reported 15ft of water in the reservoir. He had finished both the stormwater channels ana the small wall at the intake from Hitchcock’s Creek, small additional wall might be required at the side of the race when a large volume of water waa bowing, nut tnat would he determined later. The water shortage now being over, the committee desired to thank all who had assisted in any way to meet th© difficulty.—Cr Anderson said tne reservoir was only 4ft from being full, it was intended to put in slot gas meters, as far as possible.—Th© Mayor said Mr M’Curdio had boon absent, but was preparing a report on the waterworks. —The report was adopted. It was decided to levy the same rates as last year. It was also decided to inflict the 10 per cent, penalty for unpaid . rates in December instead of February, and to renew subscriptions to the Expansion League.
