Men who were apparently acquainted with the routine of the department obtained a pay cheque from the engineers' department. They allegedly forged tie signature of the ■cashier and got the cheque countersigned by another official without arousing suspicion. They then cashed it and disappeared. So far they have not been traced. FIRE AT HOBART. HOBART, May 26. Damage to the extent of £6OOO was caused by fire which occurred at the Mercury office's bookbinding department, which was practically wiped out. Much valuable machinery was destroyed.
