DOPING RUMOUR UNFOUNDED. Press Association—By Telp[ vaph—Copyright SYDNEY, April 24. Commenting on Rapine’s win in the Cumberland Stakes, the Telegraph says:—“He won comfortably. To date, he is the only horse to have scored twice at the meeting. He has won £3340 in stakes.” No official announcement has been made as to the alleged doping of Rapine. It is rumoured that the gelding did not appear himself ir. the morning, and his owner reported to the stewards that the horse had beer, doped, but there was nothing in his ai pearanco to indicate that that was so, as ho won comfortably, and the rumour was apparently without foundation. The official view expressed by Iho stipendiary stewards, and supported by two detectives who made inquiries regarding the matter, is that there was no need to take action in regard to the rumours of the doping of Rapine prior to his victory in the Cumberland .Stakes. Mr Colin Stephen (chairman of the Australian Jockey Club), in an interview, said lie was satisfied that this was another cose of the rapidity with which racecourse whisqors passed around. He added that the trainer had found Rapine scouring, and had called in a veterinary surgeon, who treated the animal. The owner insisted on a start if possible in order to keep faith with the public. The horse improved, and the veterinary advised that it v. as safe to sia.it him. It is suggested that somebody saw the veterinary looking at Rapine, and apparently the story got round that the horse was not veil, but Rapine answered all questions. The proprietor of the stables where Rapine was housed stated that outside interference was suspected, and finger prints were discovered on the dust of the -.vimlow of Rapine's stall. It wius unlikely that anyone could get through the window, but he might have thrown the horse something. Another suggestion was that the grass v. hich formed j part of the horse's feed might ha-e included j a deleterious herb.
