PIANOFORTE RECITAL

■<» MISS VERA MOORE. For her recital on Saturday, April 26, in Burns Hull, Miss Vera Moore has chosen a programme which should attract all music-lovers. It includes representative works by the three greatest composers— Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms—and some interesting modern works by Ravel and Scriabin. The Beethoven sonata chosen for the occasion is particularly interesting and is one that is not very often heard on the concert platform. It was composed in Beethoven’s most mature period, and is a superb piece of programme music. The first movement is called “The Parting,” the second, “The Absence.” the third, “The Return.” The first movement opens with three notes reminiscent of the postilion’s horn and under these Beethoven has written the words “Lebe-wohi” (fare thee well). Those throe notes occur many times throughout the movement in varying keys and moods, while other passages suggestive of the. galloping of horses and the bustle of departure are intermingled. The end is an exquisite and long-drawn-out diminuendo in which the sounds of the horn become fainter and fainter until they gradually die away. Two abrupt chords close the movement. Tlie second movement “The Absence,” is soft and expressive, and leads without a break into the third, “Tho Return,” which is full of that exuberance and joy that. Beethoven knew how to express so marvellously in music. The box plan and day sales are at the Bristol.
