HISTORY ENACTED.
THE PAGEANT CONTINUES. PUBLIC SUPPORT MAINTAINED. Favoured by keen public support, by the best of weather, and by a conscientious band of performers, the Naval and Military Pageant at Carisbrook last night was again successful in every respect. It is a credit to nil taking part in the ceremony and a quality that is appreciated by the public is that the programmes have so far been commenced and finished punctually. Last evening’s performance was as brilliant a spectacle as that of Saturday night, and it drew from the spectators equal applause. There was no trace of dullness about the proceedings, and the performers showed that from the earlier displays they have gained experience that proved advantageous. The band tattoo was one of the most impressive sections of an impressive ceremony last evening, and the selections submitted were thoroughly enjoyed. As an educational feature the historical pageant itself was recognised as invaluable, and the illustration, by means of a comparison of the work of the artillery of to-day and that of 500 yeai’s ago, of the almost incomprehensiole improvements in that section of military work was extremely interesting. Of an historical nature also was the ceremony of guard mountmg as carried out at St. James’s Palace in 1790, and the reproduction of a minor attack in the late war, entitled “Somewhere in France,’’ was of interest as an enactment of history of a later date. The exhibitions of Morris dancing and an old English dance by the Y.W.C.A. Ladies’ Class were again popular attractions, and the illuminated club swinging by the Y.W.C.A. Ladies’ Class was greatly enjoyed. The torchlight marching by pupils of the Otago Boys’ High School wag as impressive as on the first occasion on which it was witnessed. The crowds collected on the hillside have by their generosity refuted to a great extent the allegation that go there in a spirit, of meanness, as they have responded liberally to appeals for assistance in swelling the funds. The attention of all employers and citizens is drawn to the Mayor’s special request that a half-holiday lie declared on Wednesday next, that all those who have not yet done so, may see the Naval and Military Pageant, now beinn- performed at Carisbrook. Particularly is this desired for the sake of those employees who aro taking part in the pageant. A special feature of the afternoon’s session will be the staging of the Living Flag by 5000 children. Those who were privileged to see this on Saturday afternoon last will not readily forget tne impression, made.
