The criminal proceedings against him have consequently been withdrawn, and he will be confined in a. mental institution. , On February 11, while a picnic party from Jingellic was having lunch' a few miles from the township a. man suddenly appeared with a repeating rifle and opened fire. Ho fired 17 shots. Three men were wounded and two died. Batson, who committed the deed, was caught after a hunt which- lasted for five days.
