AQUATICS

CRUISING AND FOURTEEN-FOOTER RACE. . Fine weather and a fresh full-sail breeze prevailed Tor the, Otago Yacht and Motor Beat Club’s races on Saturday afternoon. Messrs \V. R. Waters (commodore). J. T. Paul, J. Jardiue, and E. Davys officiated at the Boat Harbour, and Messrs J. Angcll, J. Hudson, S. Smith, and O. Marlin were in charge at Broad Bay. Six yachts faced the starter at 2 p.m. at the Boat Harbour, and a good start was effected, Winifred being first away, followed by Gleam, Feather, Eunice, Spray, and Sprat. Winifred soon established a good lead, and on getting on to the windward thresh the order became—Winifred, Eunice, Gleam, Feather, Spray, and Sprat. This order was maintained throughout, the result being: Winifred (ser), 3hrs 42min 44sec 1 Eunice (smin), 3hrs 54min 6soc 2 Gleam (Smin), 4hrs Imin 29see 3 Feather (4min), 4hrs 2min 25sec ... '... 4 Spray and Sprat retired at Macandrew’s Bay, the wind bfing too heavy for those small craft. CRUISING RACE. Thirteen launches took part in the launch race, Nell starting at £..45 p.m., the other launches following at intervals according to handicap, until Aotea, the scratch boat, left at 3.14 p.m. Orari soon caught Nell and led the race from Russell’s onwards, although the course taken by Orari was somewhat shorter than that followed by the other boats, Orari cutting out Russell’s beacon, whereas the other boats kept the channel course. Marewa, Mamari. and Intruder had a very interesting and close race for second place, the result being:— Orari (25min), 3hrs 45min 38sec 1 Marewa (15min). 3hrs 47min Mamari (16min 20soc), 3hrs 47min Slsec 3 Intruder (16min 30see), shrs 43min 12sec 4 The other motor boats, Fan, Imp, Stella, Aotea, Norana, Isabel, Ngaio.
