CLEANING-UP MOVEMENT

EXTENSION IN AMERICA. FORTY PEOPLE ARRESTED. Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. NEW YORK. April 1L (Received April 13, at 5.5 p.ni.) The movement to clean up American cities was extended to Cleveland (Ohio), when a special contingent of 150 Federal agents, supplied with warrants, arrived from Washington. Forty persons were arrested, and it is expected that 400 bootleggers will be. apprehended before the campaign is ended, Rumonrs had been circulated that Cleveland, which will be the scene of the Republican National Convention, would be. very wet, as the local dry agents had been very lax in the enforcement of the prohibition law. Five are being indicted for taking- bribes. The campaign for to-day’s arrests was arranged months ago, evidence being gathered by a special group of Washington agents. Those who were arrested to-day included the local deputy sheriff, who is charged with owning a saloon.— A. and N.Z. Cable. A message from Pittsburg on March 10 stated that the “clean-up ’’movement in American cities was extended to that city, when mounted State troopers rode through the streets and closed 600 saloons which were ostensibly selling non-alco-holic beverages, upon the orders of Governor Pinchot, who issued a statement condemning the condition in Pittsburg. The statement said: “Lawlessness flourishes, the saloons are openly and boldly defying the Constitution of the United States, illegal beer and whisky and other liquors arc being sold boldly. In many instances poisonous, raw beverages are being dispensed, and many drunken men are found all over the city. Federal prohibition enforcement and local police raids seem to have had little impression.” Governor Pinchot threatened to keep the troopers in the city until the evils wore eradicated.
