Jack, the head master, who hag retired after 44 years of uninterrupted teaching. Mr Jack formally vacated the charge to the relieving head master (Mr Smith). Mr Smith and Mr Dallas then expressed the feelings of all the teachers in their regret at the early retirement of Mr Jack, while still strong to use his rich store of experience for the benefit of the school. Mr M'Leod, secretary of the committee, bade farewell to Mr Jack on behalf of the School Committee. Mr Dallas then presented to Mr Jack a serviceable Mosgiel rug and a leather suitcase. and to Mrs Jack a heavy silver photo frame. Mi Jack, in reply, said that his period at the Mosgiel School had been a nappy one, and he recalled with pleasure the excellent record of the senior pupils, many of whom had already begun promising careers, and also the record of success in the efforts to link up the school life by means of school excursions, and by entertainments given by the children to their parents or other classes, and thus bringing into the school the wider outside interests and something beautiful and gracious. Mr Jack reminded them that he rejoiced in his pupils’ success, and grieved at the failure of those who did not make good. He concluded by warning them that it was the little weaknesses and carelessnesses that would ruin their work and character. The function concluded with the singing of a verse of the National Anthem.
