Saturday afternoon marked the official opening of the golfing season at St. Clair links where a large number of members and friends gathered as the guests of Mr and Mrs T, K. Sidey to partake in the mixed foursomes match for the Sidey Cup. Although the weather was fine, it was not the best for golf, a troublesome north-cast wind making' bogey a hard opponent to beat. As a consequence the scores were somewhat below tno usual standard, the host card showing 1 down to the “Colonel.” Miss Q. Watson and Mr C*. B. Wight (Otago champion) were the winners, Mrs Waddell Smith and Mr W. G. Wight (club champion) being runners-up, with a score of 2 down. A putting competition, which was held for the visiting ladies, was won by Mr* Emerson. Before presenting the cup to the winning pair, Mrs Sidey apologised for the absence of Mr Sidey. who had unfortunately been called to Wellington with the deputation regarding Otago's now Dental School. How ever, she shared the same views as Mr Sidey as regards I,he progress and prosperity of the club, and wished the members a successful season. The winners were then presented with the. cup and a small trophy each from Mr and Mrs Sidey. In replying on behalf of the club, Air A. C. Hanlon (the captain) referred to the unavoidable absence of Mr Sidey, who had always followed the progress of the ' club with a keen interest, and although the members were sorry their president was unable to be with them on this occasion, they very’ much ap predated the eapahle manner in which Mrs Sidey hii(l entertained them to such an j enjoyable afternoon roa. The club was fortunate in having a president who, with the help of Mrs Sidey. had done so much to further the interests of the club. After the singing of “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows,” the function was brought to a close with three hearty cheers, for Mr and Mrs -Sidey.
