INTER-FACULTY SPORTS.

“ARTS” WDs T THOMPSON SHIELD. RECORDS AND STANDARDS BEATEN. The annual intor-faoulty athletic championships of the Otago University were held at the Caledonian Ground on Saturday. The weather conditions, except for a gusty wind from the east, were good, and the track was hard. The attendance of the public was fair, the grandstand being comfortably filled, while there were a number of people collected outside the ropes. In every respect the mooting was a thorough success, the events, which were almost invariably interesting, being carried out with despatch. As a result, there were no 'slack moments, the public always having something to occupy their attention. A feature of the meeting was the number of fractures that records and standards received. the first excitement in this connection w*as manifested when the long jump was taking place, D. Stevenson gradually working up hia distance until he beat the record established by R. Harris in 1914 with two inches to spare from a tie. Stevenson had an casv win. tho first and second men being well behind. And in the mile L. E. Jordon, with no record to beat, put up the time of 4min 47 l-ssec—s 3-sseo under tho standard. There was a similar development m connection with the half-mile, horbes doing the distance by two seconds under the standard time in 2min sscc. W. J. Scott, in the high jump, had no easy task, and his lowering of Kingston’s record, by half an inch only, won for him warm applause. From an early stage it seemed that the Arts Faculty were on the high road to success insofar as tho winning of the Thompson Cup was concerned, and events during the meeting were on the line of the opening promise. When the final figures wore totalled it was found that “Arts had been menaced by only one faculty- Junior Medicals”—the “Senior Medicals, ’ which won the shield last year (the first occasion of its being available) being far from the winners’ aggregate. _The Barrett Uup, which was held by a University man now making his name in English inter-Unrver-sity contests (A. E. Forritt) goes to L). H. Morgan for 1924, this performer winning no fewer than five events. On Saturday, March 22, a very successful school sports meeting was held at Mornona. The weather was good, and a very enjoyable day was spent by all who attended. The main purpose of such meetings is to raise the physical standard of the pupils, and to foster a sporting spirit. Preparations were somewhat hurried, but everything wont olf satisfactorily. xVIr A. P. Roydhouse, physical instructor of the Otago schools, gave' much valuable assistance to the teachers, but unfortunately he met with a painful accident, and was unable to be present. He was instrumental in procuring the services of Mr J. M. Cree, physical instructor, Southland, and it was to his skill and energy and that of his assistants, Messrs Jones and Forrester, both of Dunedin, that the success of the meeting was largely duo. The schools competing were Allanton, Mornona, Otokia, lienloy, Berwick, Maungatua, and AVoodside. The entries were numerous, the events wore keenly contested, and in the flat races some good times were recorded. During the afternoon a display of physical exercises by the combined schools was given under the direction of Mr Cree, and was favourably commented upon by those present.
