EMPIRE EXHIBITION
ORGANISING ACCOMMODATION. MSS DICKSON’S EFFORTS. Prwu> Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, March 28. Miss Dickson, of Austral House, who is organising accommodation for the Exhibition visitors, tells of some curious adventures. She visited practically every establislnuent in Bloomsbury, the great board-ing-house and hotel district. At some boarding-houses an ascent of seven stones was necessary, and no lifts were provided, while several possessed only one bathroom for 50 guests. Some queer French and Italian landladies have elaborate cards and booklets describing wonderful accommodation, but when the visitor was admitted she was almost gassed by the fearful cooking smells, which would destroy the healthiest appetite. Many houses accept Egyptian and Indian guests. Some landladies are convinced that Australians are able to afford high prices, and are refusing to reserve accommodation until the crowds arrive, when they will demand exorbitant terms. Miss Dickson has prepared a list to protect Australian visitors. —vSydney Sun Cable. OPENING ON SUNDAY. GOVERNMENT GUARANTEE INCREASED. LONDON, March 28. Sir James Stevenson told a deputation that the partial opening of the Empire Exhibition on Sundays would result in heavy financial loss. The executive council had decided against such opening by a majority of two to one. Certain of the dominions also did not favour opening on Sundays. Mr William Graham, Secretary of the Treasury, has given notice of motion in the House of Commons that the Government guarantee for the British Empire Exhibition be increased from £IOO,OOO to £600,000. — Reuter.
