THE EMPIRE SQUADRON
VISIT TO MELBOURNE. REMARKABLE STREET SCENES. A»»ociation—33y Telnjeeph—CopyrtgUl MELBOURNE, March 18. (Received Marcli 18, at 9.35 p.m.) There was a public holiday in honour of the squadron s visit. The weather was fine and the city was full of visitors, while bunting and decorations were displayed everywhere. A great number o*' people watched the march of 1500 bluejackets. It is estimated that over 100,000 persons were packed along the route, swarming all the vantage points. The crush, was so dense in some places that the people fought for positions and broke the harriers, swamping the route.
The mounted police had the greatest difficulty in driving the crowd hack, the horses trampling and crushing them. This roused the ire of the male section, who vociferously demonstrated against the police. Women shrieked and many fainted in the suffocating crush to escape the invading horsemen. Some women are reported to have used hatpins to protect themselves. Great crowds paraded the illuminated streets at night.
