ARGENTINE TINNED MEAT
POSITION OF DOMINIONS. LONDON, March 4. Mr J. J. Lawson, Financial Secretary to the War Office, stated in the House of Commons that the Australian Govern ment had not complained about the tinned meat contract placed with Argeii tine firms. All recent contracts for frozen meat had provided for supplies from the dominions. It was impossible, he said, to give an undertaking to purchase dominion meat exclusively in the future, irrespective of cost. Mr Walsh, Secretary for War, was asked whether, in view of the Australian preference to British goods, amounting in some cases to 45 per cent., it would not be advisable to accept the Australian meat tender. Mr Walsh did not reply. Mr W. Lunn, Parliamentary Secretary for Overseas Trade, replying to Sir Burton Chadwick (Conservative), said that no special commissioner was appointed to examine into the successful competition of American and British steel in Australia, although, when the trade commissioner reported the fact, it was brought to tho attention of the interests concerned.
