THE HELLENIC STATE
GREECE NO LONGER A KINGDOM. CHANGE TAKES EFFECT AT ONCE. Bras* Association —By Telegraph—Copjrri'jit LONDON, March 17. The Athens correspondent of Tho Times says: “There is at last a movement on Toot to end the political strife in Greece. The originators of it arc the moderate Monarchists, who realise that even should a plebiscite result in favour of the maintenance of the monarchy, the King’s position, if he returned, would not be pleasant owing to the hostility of an important section of hia subjects. The Monarchists, therefore, seem inclined to compromise on a Republican bas’s. They will recognise the Republic provided that there are free elections afterwards. “Meanwhile tho Government has altered the country’s official title of the Kingdom of Greece to the Hellenic State. From to-day the customary prayers offered in the Church for their Majesties will cease. All pictures of their Majesties will bo removed from public offices.”—The Times. FORCING REPUBLICANS’ HAND. BUCHAREST, Mardh 17. (Received March 18, at 7.45 p.m.) The King of Greece has rejected the Republican Government’s offer to accept voluntary abdication, retaining his royal title and receiving four-fifths of his present financial allowance.—Sydney Sun Cable.
