The work authorised at Constitution street aim Aurora terrace was under way. In addition to the usual cleaning up of the main streets and the square, channels had been cleared in Slant street. Harbour terrace, and Cemetery road. About a letter from’ the State forest service, the committee had carefully considered the matter, and bad to report that, while Generally approving of tho proposal sot forth in the letter from the State forest service, dated February 16, 1924, in regard to standardising specifications, regulations, and by-laws relating to the use of timber in buildings, the committee had no special recommendation to make in relation to same. In regard to the Beach street sower, tho committee had reconsidered this question, and had decided that this part of the borough would be best served in thc_ meantime by tho sower being laid in tho opposite direction to that which was previously proposed. The committee had given instructions that the work be proceeded with, on completion of the work at Island terrace, at an estimated cost of £122. Cr Borrio thought a price should be accepted for tho digg.ing of the Beach street sewer. —This was approved.—Report adopted. The Finance Committee recommended that accounts amounting (<> £343 13b 2d be passed for payment. The fortnight’s totalled £lsl 14s lOd. Regarding a letter from the borough manager of Tanmarnnui conveying resolutions passed by his council in respect to local bodies controlling tho sale of property, the committee could not recommend the council to support the resolutions, which were of a most revolutionary nature, and based on assumptions wnich, for the most part, had no foundation in fact. —A discussion took place whether the council should keep the football ground in order, or whether footballers should put in a few evenings in effecting improvements. —Report, adopted. The Gas and Water Committee’s report showed tho fortnight’s receipts to be £Bl Is 6d and the , expenditure £l2 12s lid. During tho month of February 18 tons IDcwt of coal was carbonised, producing 16.CC0 cubic feet to the ton, or a total of 296.000 c.f.—an increase when compared with the corresponding month last year of 38.000 cubic feet. The water officer reported that the reservoir was down 14ft Sin; ho had fitted a meter on to the supply to the sanitary farm and his own house at, Sawyers’ Bay. He was utilising all his spare time from the shipping at the work authorised to be done at the reservoir; had grouted part of tho storm-waiter channel, and put 10 more loads of stone at tho bottom end; had also cut two chains of a race to lead some spring water into the little reservoir.—Cr Anderson, in moving the adoption of the report, said there had been complaints about the water from the reservoir.—lt was stated that the water had been turned off that day.—Cr Smith said there had been too many turnings off of the water lately, and it was strange tiiat tho supply should be turned off, and tho water discoloured as a consequence on Mondays when tho water supply was most needed. —Cr M‘Lachlan said the Water Committee should see to it.—Cr Borrie said tho reservoir had not been cleaned out for 50 years because there was no alcrnative reservoir to supply the town. —Cr Anderson, in replying, said the reservoir had risen over a foot, and was still rising over an incli per day. Therefore shipping was now being supplied.—Report adopted. Of three genders, that of Mitchell and Mntheson, being the lowest (£SO 10s), was accepted for tho renovation of the offices and stairway. The Mayor said Mr M'Curdie had visited tho borough water works, and he would report on means of increasing the water supply.—Cr Cable was strongly of opinion that Mr Stewart should be engaged to report on tho probability of increasing the supply by boring.—After discussion it was decided to obtain a report from Mr Stewart. The council then went into committee. Cr Cable said he thought there was too much done in committee.
