EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE.

, OTAGO BRANCH. A meeting of the Committee of Management of the Otago branch of the Npw Zealand Education! Institute was hold last Saturday. Mr Wm. Rodger presiding. It was resolved that the secretary of the Otago branch should be the secretary of the teachers’ section of the Cash Purchase Association. Mr J. Hawke, acting secretary, was appointed secretary ih succession to Mr J Ironside. Mr Ironside was appointed a member of the Committee of Management in place of Mr Burns, who has resigned. Mr 0. C. Jones was appointed advocate for appellant teachers for 1924. The New Zealand Educational Institute wrote asking for nominations for teachers’ representatives to sit on the Grading Appeal Board. The committee decided to nominate Mr R. R. Hunter, of Otago, l and Mr C. T. Aschman. of aCnterbury. The balance sheet for the year ended December 31, 1923, was presented and apnroved. Gratification was expressed by members that the credit balance was so good, and it was suggested by the chairman that the branch would soon be in a position to open negotiations for, a club room. A letter was received from the New Zealand Institute of Architects forwarding its views on the policy of the Minister regarding the erection of schools. The letter exoressed disapproval of the Minister’s policy. -It was resolved that the Education Board be written to supporting the protest of the institute of Architects. The Souhland branch wrote asking for a report on its arithmetic scheme. It was decided to ask sub-branches to consider the scheme and it was suggested that the Dunedin sub-branch might meet to-day. A considerable amount of discussion took place on the new’ scale of salaries for assistants and also on the new regulation for the organisations of schools. The committee expressed strong approval of the stand taken by the ’institute’s journal, National Education, in opposing the department’s , dictatorial policy.
