OPPRESSIVE TAXATION
DEMAND FOR RELIEF. BRITISH MANUFACTURERS’ LARGE ORDER. Association —By Telesr&ph—-Copyright LONDON, February 28. (Received Feb. 28, at 8.5 p.m.) A deputation, representing 20 manufacturers’ associations, interviewed Mr MacDonald and Mr Sidney Webb, urging a reduction of taxation which is oppressing industry. It also urged an extension of the operation of • export credits and trade facilities; the establishment of a definite basis of trade with Russia, giving exporters security; the discovery of some basis of negotiation to meet ‘the high tariffs which are excluding many classes of goods from France, Italy, and the United States; the negotiation ol some reasonable preference for British manufacturers in India and Egypt ; the introduction of legislation to control purchases abroad by British public bodies; an amendment of the Merchandise Marks Act in view of the continued sale of foreign goods as British; the continuation, of the M’Kenna duties on motor cars and musical instruments; and an extension of the operation of the second part of the Safeguarding of Industries Act.
