WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL
The monthly meeting of the Waikouaiti County Council was held on Tuesday; present—Crs A. C. M'Laehlan (chairman), P. Briscoe, E. Laley, G. Gilmore, J. Preston, and A. Hickler. The Inspector (Mr T. Lang) reported as follows on the various ridings; Hawkesbury.—“The road from the junction of Mount Watkin’s road to Kiatoa has been graded. About 220 yards of gravel has been carted out by the contractor to Mill road and NankivelTa road. To make a satisfactory job of the road the contract would have to bo increased by at least 60 yards. Forty yards of gravel from Pleasant River has been spread on the Main road, near Goodwood. Pot holes have been filled in and portions of the road blinded.” Merton Riding.—“ The worst of the ruts and hollows on the Kilmog Hill have been filled in with rotten rock. Portions of the War-fington-Omfmi road and Pryde’s road have been blinded, and metal has been broken and spread on the last-named road. On tne Main road the metal has been raked in, and the road blinded where necessary between Corner Bush and the top of the hill at the church. Bank road, at Warrington, is Ei chains in length, and would require 122 yards of metal, at a probable cost of £7O. Bailingdon ford has been improved by removing the boulders from the lower side and using them to protect the road, and 15 yards of gravel has been spread on the Kiatoa Hill. Blueskin Riding.—“ Gravel has been carted from the beach to repair the lower end of Lower Harbour road, and the walls have been repaired. A culvert on the Middle district road has been opened up, walls repaired, and new covers put on. The pitchers have been replaced under the bridge at Deborah Bay, and a culvert near the bridge has been repaired. On the Waitati-Kawa-lika road the cutting above the bridge has been metalled, and the hill past the railway crossing has been graded and hae since been gravelled by the residents using it Tho road to the Cliffs has also been surfaced. Gravel has been carted from the bay to repair the road through Waitati, and potholes filled on the road near Evansdale. The river has been deepened on the upper side of Mitchell’s Ford, to prevent tho water from overflowing the road. The trees complained of in Blueskin township are on private property, and are not injuring tho road in any way North-East Valley Riding—“ Three culverts have been repaired on Tine Hill road, anh. portions of the road have been surfaced. Surfacing has also been done on Pigeon Hat road and Jack’s road. Metal for Sawyers Bay roads has been ordered, and will likely be ‘ carted out this week, but I have not been able to get metal for the Main road, at Mount Cargill, yet, although X will probably get enough to fill the potholes quarried and broken within a week or two.” The reports were approved and adopted. At the request of tho council, Dr T. M'Kibbiu. District Health Officre .was m attendance during the day to discuss sanitary by-laws which would be suitable for the council to adopt. Dr M'Kibbin explained at r, rc at length the advantages and necessity of the by-laws, and urged that the council adopt them.—After further discussion €r Brisco© moved that Dr M’Kibbin be thanked for attending and the information wanted, and to inform him that the council would adopt the by-laws. The Warrington Amenities Society wrote stating that its committee had under consideration the preparation of a playing area on the sands at Warrington, Mr C. R. Howden having granted the use of some of his property for this purpose. The ground would require to bo cleared of lupins and levelled, and thereafter top-dressed, and for this purpose about 40 to 50 tons of soil would be required. Tho society asked if the council would give it permission to take sufficient top-dressing from Church road for this purple, —The Inspector said there was not too much soil to spare on that road.—lt was decided to inform the society that the council regretted there was no soil available. Calder’s Quarry (Ltd.) wrote intimating that it could supply the necessary machinery for crushing of metal, provided the council purchased the machines outright.—Received. A plan of the road through section 42, block VI, North Harbour and Blueskin district, was forwarded by Messrs Aspinall and Sim (Dunedin). —The letter was received and the council decided to consent to the taking of the land for the purposes of a new road.
The Registrar of the South Island District Native Land Court wrote in regard to Waikouaiti block XII, section 102, and stated that in connection with the proposed deviation of the Puketeraki-Herton road, the council's best plan to legalise the deviation would be to apply to the court in terms of the Public Works Act, 1908.—The Inspector stated tiiat he did not think there would be much trouble about it, although there would be a little move expense.—Received. 11. Box, Lower Harbour, wrote asking permission to erect swinging gates across the roadline on the District road.—The inspector to report at next meeting. Permission to erect a temporary fence about 18in outside his boundary lino, on Evle street, was sought by a resident of Waitati.—The application was refused. The Department of Agriculture wrote intimating that the council's special order declaring Canadian thistle not to be a noxious weed had been gazetted.—Received.
