PALMERSTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Palmerston Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening last; present— Dr Howden (Mayor), and Crs Black, M’Gregor, Barclay, Riddle, Stewart, Morrison, and Power. Apologies for absence were received from Grs Cameron and Hopkins. The Clerk of the Waihemo County Council wrote that his council had _ to supply the timber necessary for repairs to the bridge on the boundary road asked for by Mr R. L. Smith. —It was decided that the work be commenced when the material arrives. Mr J. A. Macpherson, M.P., telegraphed asking the Borough Council to arrange for a deputation to meet the Minister for Public Works on this arrival at Palmerston on the ,22nd inst.—The Mayor and the Works Committee were appointed to meet the Minister. The borough surfaceman reported that he had been in Dunedin making inquiries in connection with concreting kerbings and channels. He was now prepared to go on with the necessary kerbing and channelling, and enclosed an estimate of the materials required.—lt was resolved that the surfaceman commence work in the mam part of the town as soon as the materials could be procured. The annual balance sheet of the borough, as approved by the Audtior-general, was presented and passed. The Mayor stated that the water supply had been very low lately. There wore 250 animals within the town boundary, which consumed about 4000 gallons per day, and the supply had to be shut off early in the afternoon. He suggested that an engineer be procured to inspect the present system-—The Mayor and Crs Riddle were instructed to arrange for an expert to inspect and report. It was decided that more strict supervision over the wandering cattle nuisance was desirable and that an assistant ranger be appointed if necessary. It was resolved to invite tenders for the lease, for two years, of the Town H ( all for showing pictures.
