THE OIL SCANDAL.

ME DAUGHTEETY’S POSITION. DEMAND FOR HIS RESIGNATION. Pr»“o« AMOciation—By Telegraph —Copyrigat WASHINGTON, February 20. (Received heb. 21, at 8.5 p.m.) President Coolidge was advised by Senator Lodge, the Republican Senate leader, that sentiment was growing in the Republican Senate organisation favouring the retirement of the Attorneyi-General, Mr H. M. Daugherty. After Mr Daugherty had publicly defied the critics in a lormal statement, Senator Lodge frankly informed Mr Coolidge that the position taken by the Republicans was the result of several conferences, and he urged that the Cabinet should be cleared at last of those who had become storm centres m the oil scandal. Mr Daugherty has informed the President that he is determined not to quit under fire. White House officials refused to discuss reports that Mr Daugherty s resignation had been requested.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
