AMERICA AND PROHIBITION

ILLICIT LIQUOR TRADING.

A SPORTING ADVENTURE.

RUM-RUNNING AND PROFITS.

Frew Association—By Telegraph— Copynsfh* ■ NEW YORK, February 1. Two coincident items have revealed that the way of transgressors of the Prohibition law, while hard, is extremely profitable. Thus, a local company (Wiles and Sons) which has .been in business lor 50 years, announces that it is returning 1,000,000d0l worth of Scotch whisky to Glasgow because it is unable to compete against bootleggers’ prices, since the latter completely evade the Government tax, which this firm is obliged to pay because it is doing a legitimate business. The other item is that Sir Broderick Hartwell has issued a circular, which has just been rece ; ved, asking for subscriptions with which to form a fourth rumrunning argosy, again promising within, six months a *2O per cent, profit. The Federal authorities have begun an investigation of Sir Broderick Hartwell’s scheme, which obviously violates the United States postal law. Orthodox quarters are confessedly shocked at Sir Broderick Hartwell’s audacitv: but they may accept the offer in a spirit of sporting adventure, because it is openly made, and promises payment bv March 15. The circular aidds: “This allows a month for bottling, labelling, packing, a month for transport, and a month for lying off the United States coast for unloading. '
