WAIPIATA SANATORIUM.
Tlie Waipiata Sanatorium Committee met in Dunedin on Tuesday night, there being present Mr J. Matheson (chairman), Rev. T. W. Potts, Messrs Chas. Reid, H. A. Dovey, Hon. R. Scott, A. S. Malcolm, and Dr MTvibbin. Leave of absence Was granted to 'Messrs'J. Ritchie and S. Fowle. The director, Dominion Meteorological Office, Wellington, in response to the committee's request for the establishment of a. weather recording station at Waipiata, advised that owing to financial stringency during and since the war no new stations were being established.—Received." It was decided that other steps bo taken in the direction of having proper records kept of the weather conditions at Waipiata. Messrs Adams Bros., solicitors, advised that all the associated South Island boards had completed joint agreements in connection with the establishment and control of the Waipiata Sanatorium.—Received. Owing to the absence of Mr Ritchie, consideration of the question of a scheme of irrigation for the committee’s farm was held over to enable Mr Ritchie to fully report on the question. Messrs Adams Bros, submitted a suggested agreement in connection with the engagement by the committee of ex-T.B. patients as members of its staff, which was approved. Dr Kidd (medical superintendent) reported that for December one patient was admitted, one discharged, and he had now vacant beds for one male and one female patient, which, owing to the large number of applications, it was decided to allot to the South Otago and Ashburton Boards subject to the medical superintendent being satisfied in regard to their patients’ suitability for treatment. The medical superintendent, who will be visiting the districts of the different associated boards at an early date, was authorised to confer with too medical superintendents of the different boards with a view to a more uniform classification of early, suitable patients for admission to the institution, and to take such steps os were considered necessary for the transfer to some other institution of two patients who had 'been in for some time, and whose condition had not improved since admission. Nine applications for admission were received, and the suitable cases were placed on the list for admission as soon as there are vacanies.
The architect reported on the contractor’s progress in connection with the now buildings Owing to the delay in obtaining the Minister’s consent to the hydro-electric scheme, it would be necessary at once to provide for the electric wiring of the buildings.—Tile committee decided that specifications and tenders be invited for the wiring of the buildings. The Hon. Sir Maui Pomare (Minister of Health) advised that ho would be in the district in March, —It was decided to ask the Minister to perform the ceremony of laying the foundation stone of the new institution at Waipiata on Tuesday, March 18. Tho Director-general of Health forwarded a copy of the report of the department’s consulting engineer on the committee’s hydro-electric scheme submitted by Mr A. P. Aldridge, but before asking the Minister’s approval of same he would like measurements made at once of the amount of water available, full particulars to be submitted to the department. The tender of If. T, Dreavor for excavation of soil from the lawn tenuis court site and removal to tho terrace in front of Diet Pavilion (being the lowest) was .accepted. Tho treasurer reported that the receipts, for tho mouth were £615 19s 9cl, expenditure £2276 4s Id, credit balance Bank of New Zealand £4954 Ss' lOd. Accounts and salaries totalling £2496 10s were passed for payment.
