ALLEGED “RINGING-IN.”
ACCUSED BEFORE THE COURT. REMANDED FOR EIGHT DAYS. SUBSTANTIAL BAIL FIXED. At the City Police Court, before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M., yesterday, William Williamson was charged that on January 2, 1924, at Invercargill, with intent to defraud, he did attempt to obtain from the Southland Racing Club the sum of £153 by falsely representing a certain trotting horse, Willie Lincoln, to be a horse known as Look Out; further, that on or about September 17, 1923. at Christchurch, he did conspire with J. Golding and Percy Capes by fraudulent means to defraud the Southland Racing Club by entering a trotting horse, Willie Lincoln, in the Oreti Harness Trot at the Southland Racing Club’s meeting under the false name of Look Out. Mr C. J. Payne (instructed by Messrs Hobbs and Corbett, of Christchurch) appeared for the accused and pleaded not guilty. Detective Beer asked for a remand for eight days. Another man had been arrested, and he wished for the full time allowed. Mr Payne asked that bail be allowed, and that it bo reasonable. He did not object to the remand if this were done. Detective Beer said he wanted substantial baiL This case was likely to develop into one of the most sensational ever heard in connection with racing. Mr Payne said accused was a horse trainer and a labourer, and he had a wife and six children. If a light bail were not granted he would have to stay in gaol for eight days. in regard to his wife and children. Detective Beer said accused had been before the court charged with fading to maintain them. The Magistrate held that the matter was not one which called for a light baiL Accused was remanded until January 18, bail being fixed at £2OO in himself, one surety of £2OO or two sureties of £IOO each on the first count and £2OO on his own recognisance on the second charge. FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS. Following upon investigations carried out by the police and trotting authorities, it is reported that another charge of “ringingin” will be laid during the week. The circumstances appear suspicious, and are in connection with the winner of a trotting race at a southern race meeting. The gelding which won the race is stated to have been entered in the name of a trotter which could not have completed the journey in the time reported to have been done. A high-class performer, it is alleged, was substituted, and further that the rider who gave if a try-out over a private track is said to have expressed doubts as to the horse being a maiden, owing to the extraordinary turn of speed it displayed. It may be regarded as significant that the stake has not been claimed, and that a substantial sum taken off the machine was demanded in cash and was paid in notes instead of by cheque.
