SETTLERS FOR CANADA
ENCOURAGEMENT OF IMMIGRANTS. REBATE ON PASSAGES SECURED. Prw A*Meiatios—By Telegraph—Copyn^il OTTAWA, January 9.' (Received January 10, at 8.2 b p.m.) . | The Montreal Star’s Ottawa correspondent says that as a result of lengthy negotiations the Ministry of Emigration has secured a 20 per cent, preference rata for the Atlantic passages of British emi- - grants settling in Canada- The new i rate - n will be effective during the 1924 season, i beginning on March 1. The steamship ,i lines will give the immigrant a rebate of 15 dollars upon his 75-dollar third-class passage immediately upon arrival The officials believe that the step will assure a saving of 1,500,000 dollars to the immigrants, who will probably number ■ 100,000 in 1924, compared with 62,493 during 1923. The rebate will be effective at Atlantic ports only.—A. and N.Z. Gable. In November last the Montreal Star** ],' Ottawa correspondent indicated that Can- s ada would soon become a lively competitor against Australia for immigrants, because she needed settlers to develop the country. The Dominion immigration office estimated that 125,000 immigrants would have entered at the close of last year, but a disquieting fact was that Canada’s exodus exceeded the inflnx. For that reason the Government- was planning an intensive campaign to attract British settlers. The, Immigration Department, said the correspondent, was endeavouring to a reduction in steamship rates, on which the companies had not then committed themselves. The Government further intended to remove ail entrance restrictions, and defray the parents’ outlay on children’s passages.
