THE BAKING DISPUTE. ULTIMATUM \BY OPERATIVES. Tree* Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, January 10. The Secretary of the Operative Bakers’ Union has notified the master bakers that the operatives will refuse to work after Saturday unless the employers agree that tfie starting time shall be 6 o’clock in the morning. The employers replied that if the men carry out the threat they will be subject to the penalties of the Arbitration Act. It is understood that the union intends to shelter behind a notice to cease work which was given in September to satisfy the provisions of the Act requiring at least seven days’ notice. It is also announced that the union is arranging to open trade union operative bakeries to carry on the fight. It is not known what attitu.de will be adopted by the carters, but it is expected tha they will side with the operatives. INSULIN DUTY REMITTED. SYDNEY, January 10. The Customs Department has decided to admit insulin to the Commonwealth without the payment of duty, irrespective of the country of origin, and to grant refunds for past importations. FRUIT-CANNING INDUSTRY. SYDNEY, January 10. Mr Tate, general manager of the Canning and Preserving Company, complains that the fruitgrowers of Australia ate taxed to the extent of £500,000 yearly for the benefit of the Queensland sugar growers. SYDNEY, January 10. Sydney and its suburbs sweltered yesterday, the thermometer touching 98deg in the shade. Bush fires swept a large area near the suburbs. Many buildings were gutted, and a furniture factory destroyed, causing damage amounting to £IO,OOO. Thomas D’Arcy, a jockey, claimed £2OOO from Mr Patrick Conally, a wellknown turf identity, for casting aspersions on the former’s integrity as a rider. The jury awarded the plaintiff £7OO. The defendant secured a stay of proceedigns for a fortnight. ORIGIN OF RINDERPEST OUTBREAK. PERTH, January 10. Advices which have been received locally show that rinderpest broke out in Colombo last July. The authorities are still grappling with it. While it is not definitely suggested that the disease emanated from Colombo it is feared that the scourge may be traced to that place. EMINENT MASONIC VISITOR. PERTH, January 10. (Received January 10, at 8 p.m.) Earl and Lady Cassilis arrived by the Osterley. The Earl, who is travelling in his Masonic capacity of First Grand Principal of the Supreme Grand Royal Chapter of Scotland, proposes to visit the Masonic Chapters in Australia and New Zealand. ROSE BAY, JEWEL ROBBERY. SYDNEY, January 10. (Received Jan. 10, at 10.55 p.m.) Antonins Zctto has been committed for trial on a charge of robbing Madame Avanza. Madame Avanza’s jewels were stolen from Rose Bay on December 10. So far £2OOO worth has been recovered.
