SMUGGLING A STOLE.

SEAMAN FINED £25. (Per United Press Association.) TIMARU, January 10. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day a seaman from the steamer Omana, from Newcastle, was found guilty of smuggling a marabout stole of the value of £6. The Customs collector stated that accused was going ashore with a parcel partly concealed. Counsel for the accused pleaded ignorance on the part of his client, who was asked by a lady friend in Westport to purchase a stole in Sydney. The magistrate, in inflicting a fine of £25, said he regretted that the law did not allow him to impose a smaller fine. He considered a fine of £lO would have been sufficient to meet the case.
