BRUCE BUILDING SOCIETY.

One of the oldest and most, successful institutions in Milton is the Bruce Property and Investment and Building Society, which was established on December 1,1868, and which has had a flourishing career over since. The society was inaugurated with the object of assisting members to buy or build houses, and it has been the means of enabling a large number of people to procure homes of their own. The operations of the society are not confined to house properties, money being advanced on farm lands as well. A great deal of money has been lent on properties in Milton, Dunedin, Balclutha, Kaitangata and Lawrence. At the end of each year the money earned in the way of interest, etc., is returned to shareholders in the way of dividends, while money is advanced at a reasonable rate of interest, with repayment extended over a period of years. The 55th annual report, which was issued in November last, showed that the total amount advanced on mortgage since the society was started was £31,435.
