THE STIRLING DISTRICT.

OR [GEN' OF THE TOWNSHIR

The township of Stirling, which is situated in the midst of a very rich agricultural and pastoral district, was surveyed about 1877, when railway communication was established with Dunedin. The land was then owned hv Mr Anderson, one of the oldest residents of Otago, who made alternative offers to the Government. He undertook to give the Government free permission to run the railway for a distance of two miles through his property on condition that it erected a railway station at Stirling, but if this proposal was declined a payment of £5 per acre was to be made for the land required for the line. After considerable delay the Government erected the station, and Dir Anderson then surveyed and cut up 10 acres, which formed the original township. An additional area was subsequently added, and on this also the present township stand?.
