(Received January 9, at 8.5 p.m.) At the close of an all-day meeting of the Executive of the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen it was officially announced that in view of the overwhelming majority—namely, six to one, against the acceptance of the Wages Board's award the Executive had decided to request the general managers of the railways to meet them to discuss the position with a view to its improve meat.—Reuter. A message which appeared on Monday stated; A serious situation in the railways is threatened as the result of the locomotive engineers’ and firemen’s ballot. There is a provision empowering the excutive to call a national strike if necessary in the event of the award being rejected, but it is expected that the union will seek a modification of the award. The employees are angry over the question of extra ]my on Sundays, overtime, and mileage allowances. They state that the engine-drivers will lose 30s weekly, and the firemen from 20s to 255. The ballot resulted 21-12 against acceptance of the Wages Board award.
